Macros, Keto, Paleo, oh my!
Are you bombarded with which diet trend would benefit you? Are you so confused on the differences that you feel overwhelmed and just decide to forget it altogether? Have you confused all three and are not sure which direction is the right direction for your dietary needs, physical goals, and overall wellbeing? Well, you are DEFINITELY not the only one. I was in the same boat.
Looking through all the social media platforms, scouring the internet, hearing testimonials from friends and loved ones gave me an overwhelming sense that everyone knows what they are talking about and their results sell their success!
Well, let’s not jump the gun. On the surface, I can open up ANY social media platform and see individuals showcasing their ‘hard work’ and dietary preferences, but that doesn’t mean it will be a one size fits all approach for me.
Many people do not have the understanding that everyone’s makes up is unique to them. Genetics, family history, environmental factors, and other external components can certainly affect how we absorb and utilize the nutrients we ingest from food.
Often times, I had to try multiple dietary outlets to figure out which one works better for me. Not my friend, neighbor, or coworker; but ME. This is wildly important and often leads to people not following through on their dietary choices because it makes them feel off, they didn’t get the same results, or they just didn’t like the food they were supposed to eat.
When it comes to dietary choices, I must look at important factors that speak to ME. No one else. Because no one else is going to be eating the food. Next, I want a diet that will provide me with healthful benefits, both internally and externally. Lastly, I need sustainability.
I simply cannot have one without the others. All three of those pieces are IMPERATIVE to the success of the transformation. It’s a transformation because it is no longer a trend, it becomes a lifestyle choice.
Looking at the three diets listed previously I identified some key points. There are three key factors for dietary success, and find the right diet that works for MY lifestyle and beliefs.
Macros, in my mind, hits all three of the requirements for longevity. It provides sustainability, flexibility, and the ability to eat healthful nutrients that enrich my body. I am able to eat anything that ‘fits my macros.’ This will help reduce the restrictions that some may encounter with other diets and makes it more individualized to MY needs.
Keto has its pros and cons. I firmly believe there are numerous health benefits to consuming healthy fats, however, like anything some tend to go overboard and don’t do enough research to understand the pathophysiology behind the purpose of eating healthy fats. Also, this tends to decrease the sustainability and longevity-related to this diet. Many have complained of feeling full and there is concern about the ability to eat high amounts of fat for the long-term without having cardiovascular concerns.
Paleo is good overall, but again, it has some restrictions. The premise allows the individual to eat like our predecessors. No sugar, nothing processed, nothing that wasn’t available during the prehistoric times. Although, it can be costly and financially taxing.
So there are three viable options, but why not make it my own and do what works for ME instead of falling into just one category. All of the trendy diets tend to be remarketed with small little changes here and there to make it appeal to the masses. It does NOT pertain to individual needs.
There aren’t any rules that say I can only choose one and stay with one. Remember, moderation is key and it is important to know my strengths and weaknesses prior to starting any dietary change.
Understand that if I like highly refined sugars and snacks, paleo will not work for me. Understand that eating high carbs will not allow me to be successful in the keto diet. Counting my macros will allow me to incorporate all the dietary trends into one and allow ME to make it MY own.
Macros provide me with a formula that breaks down carbs, fats, and proteins. It doesn’t matter how you get there, but personally, I incorporate elements of all three into my dietary regime.
Macros give me flexibility, allows me to eat organic, minimally processed foods, and lets me play with my ratios based on my specific needs and goals.
Keep in mind that there are multiple ways to skin a cat and there is never a wrong way as long as you are making a conscious effort to better your health and wellbeing. I have that experience and education to help guide you in the right direction.
Step by step- we will make the journey together. Remember YOU need to be strong, be fit, and be brave. This is your journey and YOUR body
