Magical Mystery Tour of Hormones

Consumption junction, what’s your thyroid dysfunction?

Well, it turns out that our thyroid may place an integral role in our dysfunction and consumption!

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped organ that lies in our throat. As benign as this seems, this little puppy controls the metabolic process in every single cell in our body!

Don’t get this confused with the pituitary gland. That big dog controls many different processes throughout the body and influences how our hormones are released through varying organs.

For example, the pancreas secretes insulin. Thyroid secrets T3 and T4. The adrenal glands secret cortisol. The testicles secret testosterone.

You get the picture.

The thyroid is unique in its role. Since it has such a large metabolic thumbprint in how our cells synthesize, it literally affects EVERY process in our body.

That’s great and everything, but how does that affect me?

The reason that this is such a hot topic of conversation is how people are so quick to try and treat everything from depression to hormone replacement PRIOR to fixing the biggest disruptor of all metabolic processes….the thyroid.

Many healthcare providers are trained to treat thyroid, but are they doing so to the best of their ability?

No.

No real explanation here, to be honest. Most providers take a very surface-level approach to the treatment of your thyroid and do not go into the depth that is deserved for such a complex and beautiful symphony of hormones.

The thyroid can literally affect the neurochemicals in our brain that may mimic signs and symptoms of depression, but instead of going on an antidepressant, the simplest answer is checking the thyroid function.

The thyroid can directly influence how fast our heart is beating, how often we have bowel movements, muscle movement, brain development, and bone regulation. Additionally, it influences hair disbursement, how our skin looks, and our sexual performance.

I wasn’t kidding when I said the thyroid gland contributes to almost all of the body's metabolic processes. It has a hand in almost everything we do to maintain balance within our bodies.

It is becoming more and more important to evaluate the thyroid process based on the fact that our diet is saturated with highly processed and refined products.

Uh Oh, Your Thyroiditis is Showing

Thyroiditis is on the rise, and more specifically Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. This is an autoimmune condition caused by chronic and ongoing inflammation- primarily dietary related.

Our food sources have been depleted of selenium and iodine, and have been replaced with high refined carbs like wheat, industrialized oils, and soy.

Gluten, soy, and industrial oils are NOT meant to be digested by our bodies. As a result, our body creates an immune modulated response to help destroy these “invaders” in our gut. Over time, our body breaks down. Think minor cracks in an armor suit. Debris can still get in (which are the food particles in this instance) and they travel throughout our high vascular body. Our body has lymphatic systems in place to help remove debris, but sometimes they can clog.

Once that happens, that's when our body truly goes haywire with protecting itself and ultimately, destroying valuable tissues and organs.

That systemic process all started with the choice of putting poor foods in our bodies. This constant activation of our immune system and eventual breakdown of vital tissues is what causes chronic inflammation and eventual destruction of organs.

Insert chronic diseases like arthritis, asthma, thyroiditis, lupus, dementia, cardiac disease, diabetes, and so on.

I Am The Food Whisperer

If there is one lesson to be learned from anything I write, please look at what you eat and understand you have to be advocates for your health and longevity in life.

The government and the FDA doesn’t always have what’s in the Populus best interest when it comes to food products. If it did, we wouldn’t have fast-food chains, highly indigestible food products that cause diseases, and money-hungry conglomerates that look to spray cancerous pesticides on everything under the sun.

It gets worse.

From all the pesticides sprayed on our crops, it affects the pH balance of the soil where the crops grow. After seasons, that soil does not become nutritious to the crop and depletes that crop of vital minerals and nutrients.

We eat those crops and then don’t get the benefit of eating a carrot or potato or broccoli. Instead, we get a crop that is laden with toxic chemicals, a nutritiously depleted shell of a vegetable and our body is still thriving for nutrition so we comfort our sulking behaviors with carbs that elicit a dopamine response and rewards us for being so brazen.

Our bodies aren't dumb. We are dumb for not seeing the downstream effects earlier. Our bodies have and will always try to maintain balance. That is what it is all about. Our thyroid is no different. It wants and NEEDS balance.

Without it, we struggle to perform day-to-day activities, live in perpetual brain fog, are constantly hungry and we wonder why we don't feel good so we are quick to jump on any medication that MASKS our symptoms instead of treating the ROOT PROBLEM!

I highly encourage you to speak with your provider and have an in-depth look at your thyroid function. Especially those in their third decade of life, females, and anyone with an already established metabolic process like DM II, heart disease, obesity, or chronic fatigue.

Your body always tells you what's wrong, you just have to listen.

Be strong. Be brave.
